Pallet, Skid, or Crate

Not sure if you need a wood pallet, skid, or crate?
Here are some differences to consider:

Pallet

  • Top and bottom deck
  • More in demand
  • Typical size 48" × 40"
  • More stable
  • More friction (harder to drag)
  • More convenient for racking
  • Max capacity 2205 lbs / 1000 kg
  • Easily hauled by a forklift lift truck

Skid

  • No bottom deck
  • Oldest type of pallet
  • Less friction (easier to drag)
  • Often used as a foundation for heavy machinery
  • A cheaper version of a pallet
  • Uses less space when nested

Crate

  • Custom-built box
  • Four walls, top, and floor
  • Great for holding products that need to be securely stored
  • Can hold larger volume
  • Very stable
  • Bulky and harder to transport
